Best sunset spots in Pai: which one should you choose?

tl;dr
For a first sunset in Pai, we’d choose Pai Canyon for its red-earth ridges and mountain views. Pick Two Huts if you’d rather settle into a seat overlooking the valley, or Doi Kiew Lom to finish a day trip further into the mountains. Whichever you choose, arrange your ride back before leaving town.

Sunset in Pai falls between about 5:50pm in November and December and about 7:10pm in June and July. Check the exact time for the day you’re going.

Pai Canyon: our pick for a first sunset in Pai
The canyon gives you somewhere to explore before watching the light change. The low sun brings out the reds and oranges in the exposed earth, with mountains darkening across the valley. Choose it if you want a walk and a distinctive landscape as part of your evening.
Check the sunset time for your visit and aim to arrive about 45 minutes beforehand. The sun disappears behind the western ridge around 15–25 minutes before official sunset, so arriving at the time shown on your phone means missing that moment.
The colour continues to change after the sun drops behind the ridge. Leave yourself enough light to make your way back: wear shoes with grip, get off the ridges while you can still see the ground clearly, and keep back from the edges. They can overhang with nothing beneath them, even where they look solid.

Two Huts: for a seated evening overlooking the valley
Two Huts is the easier choice if you’d like to find a seat and stay put for the view. This hillside café and bar looks across the fields of the Pai valley towards the mountains on the far side.
There’s covered seating, open-air space and bathrooms, with live acoustic music on some evenings. It’s a popular sunset stop, so expect a social setting.
Many visitors arrive around 5pm, when the tour trucks come up. Coming earlier gives you time to order before the queues build. Outside food and drinks aren’t permitted.
Choose Two Huts if comfortable seating and somewhere to spend the evening matter as much as the sunset itself.

Doi Kiew Lom: to finish a day in the mountains
Doi Kiew Lom is a roadside viewpoint on Highway 1095 between Pai and Pang Mapha, looking over forested ridges and limestone peaks.
At 26.2 km from Nolo, it makes most sense when you’re already out that way. We’d choose it as the final stop after visiting Tham Lod or spending the day around Ban Jabo, rather than making it the whole reason for a trip from town.
It’s a simple place to pause for the view. Stalls, toilets and covered facilities vary by day and season, so check ahead if you’re counting on them.
Plan the journey back before heading out. Sections of Highway 1095 are unlit, and you’ve still got the mountain road between the viewpoint and Pai after sunset.

Why some other viewpoints aren’t on this list
A good view in the afternoon doesn’t always make somewhere a workable sunset spot. Opening times matter:
- The White Buddha closes at 6pm. You can enjoy the view in the late afternoon, but sunset falls after closing for much of the year. We wouldn’t build your sunset plan around being able to stay.
- Yun Lai closes at 5pm. It’s shut before sunset, so choose somewhere else for the evening.
- Doi Miang and Doi Thong have vehicle gates that sometimes close at 6pm. Plan to leave before the gates close. Doi Miang also looks east across the valley, away from the setting sun.
For an evening spent watching the sunset, stick with one of the three spots above.
Sort out the ride home
For all three spots, arrange the return journey as well as the ride out. Finding a pickup at Pai Canyon after sunset can be difficult, and the road back from Two Huts is unlit.
For Pai Canyon or Two Huts, ask us at Nolo about a shared sunset taxi. It costs 100 baht a person, goes once four people are booked, includes the return journey and has a driver who waits. Message us to check the arrangements for your visit.
Several of our high-season trips also finish at a sunset spot:
- Pai Landmarks finishes at Pai Canyon.
- The Bamboo Bridge trip finishes at Two Huts.
- Tham Lod and the Ban Jabo, Kikokor and Mae Lana trip finish at Doi Kiew Lom.
See our Activities page for the trip formats, then ask what’s running during your stay. You’re welcome to join our trips even if you’re staying elsewhere.
