Is Pai good for solo travellers?

tl;dr
Yes. If you want to meet other backpackers, stay at a social hostel with group trips and evening activities. You’ll have ways to find company and explore places outside town, from Pai Canyon to Tham Lod Cave. Prefer doing your own thing? You can do that too — just give transport a little planning.

If you want company, choose somewhere social
Where you stay makes a big difference to a solo trip. If meeting people is one of your reasons for coming to Pai, we’d recommend a social hostel with organised activities.
Shared spaces give you somewhere to start a conversation. Trips and group evenings give you a reason to spend time together beyond sharing a dorm.
A private room at a guesthouse can suit someone who wants their own space, but you’ll need to make more of your own plans for meeting people. You can still join activities while staying elsewhere — including our trips at Nolo.
Before booking, look at what a hostel actually offers. Are there trips you’d want to join? What happens in the evenings? How much privacy will you have when you want a break?

Join something you actually want to do
If introducing yourself to a whole room feels awkward, a group trip is an easier place to start. You’ve already got something in common: you both wanted to visit the same place.
A cooking class or yoga session can work too. Pick something that interests you, and conversation has somewhere to go beyond “Where are you from?”
Try joining early in your stay if something catches your eye. It gives you a chance to get to know people over more than one afternoon.
And keep the invitations simple. Asking someone whether they’re heading to Walking Street for food is enough. You don’t need to arrive with a group to suggest a plan.
What can you do in Pai?
There’s plenty beyond hanging around the hostel. Our group trips bring together some of the places people come to Pai to see:
- Pai Landmarks: Yun Lai, Mor Pang Waterfall, the White Buddha and Pai Canyon.
- Tham Lod and Doi Kiew Lom: a trip further into the mountains, with the cave followed by a sunset viewpoint.
- The Bamboo Bridge and Two Huts: the bridge through the rice fields, then sunset at Two Huts.
See our Activities page for the routes and high-season week, then message us to find out what’s running during your stay.
For an outing on your own, the White Buddha is a walk from town, and the Bamboo Bridge is worth it once you’ve arranged transport. Our hot spring comparison and waterfall comparison can help you choose another place to visit.
Yoga, meditation and massages are options too. You can have a day to yourself without spending it looking for someone to join you.
Can you explore without a scooter?
Yes, but arrange transport for the places outside town — including the return journey.
Getting dropped off at a viewpoint or waterfall doesn’t mean you’ll find a pickup when you’re ready to leave. This matters particularly if you’re going somewhere for sunset.
A group trip takes that organising off your hands. If you want to choose your own route, ask about arranging a driver.
Our guide to getting around Pai without a scooter explains the options and where they fall short.

What about evenings?
Walking Street is an easy starting point for food, whether you’re heading out with people or on your own. The stalls open from early evening, so you can wander along and choose whatever catches your eye.
At Nolo, we arrange group activities in the evenings. At 10pm, we head into town together for anyone who wants to carry on. You can join the evening without committing to the whole night.
How Nolo helps
Nolo is built for travellers who want to meet people and still have some privacy.
We arrange trips and activities you can join or skip. Your pod gives you your own space within a shared dorm, so you can pull the curtain when you’ve had enough company.
Our local staff can also help you explore independently. If you know where you want to go but aren’t sure how to get there, they can help organise transport or call ahead to check prices and opening times.
You’re welcome on our trips even if you’re staying elsewhere. Message us with your dates and what you’d like to see.
